Nassau is the capital of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas and this sunny, former British colony is one of the most interesting places to visit in the Caribbean. The city is located on New Providence, one of several islands that make up the Bahamas, and over 70% of the population live here.

There are daily flights to Nassau from Canada and the US, and also from the UK, so reaching the town from almost any area of the world is relatively simple. Visit Bay Street to admire colonial buildings and take the scenic Woodes Rogers Walk, or dine in style in one of the many excellent restaurants where seafood and shellfish and Bahamian dishes like conch fritters are a speciality. Be sure to explore the Pirate Museum, or simply relax with a cool drink on Junkanoo Beach.

Swimmers and water sports lovers adore Nassau, and its warm waters are a real treat. From a low of 73F or 23C in January and February to a high of around 82F or 28C from June right through to September, the seas are bath water warm and perfect for a wide range of activities. Add the clear, blue waters, the wonderful dive sites and shipwrecks that dot the area and there really is nowhere to compare. Surfing is extremely popular and there are some exceptional surfing spots close to Nassau.

Best time to visit Nassau
Any time is a terrific time to visit Nassau. The Bahamas has a tropical monsoon climate with hot, sunny days in summer and warm winters. Typical temperatures range from 79F or 26C in January and February to 89.8F or 31.6C in August. The highest rainfall is in June and August but this normally means late afternoon downpours which are over quickly and which counteract any humidity, or night time rain showers which give way to bright, fresh mornings.Pack plenty of sunscreen and light, cotton clothing and swimwear. Take a lightweight waterproof jacket in case of occasional showers.
The top attractions in Nassau
The Bahamas has a chequered history and pirates and the slave trade are notable areas. Discover more about the history of the region, including when Edward Teach – more commonly known as Blackbeard – sailed the coastal waters at the Pirate Museum. Fort Fincastle dates from 1793 and kids will enjoy seeing the cannons that used to protect the town, while the tame parakeets at Ardastra Zoo and Conservation Centre will keep everyone happy for hours. Cable Beach is a long stretch of golden sand where you can swim and sunbathe in style, or try surfing from the Abaco Islands or Eleuthera; there are surf spots suitable for all levels and plenty of organised boat trips to.
